ABC’s Alumni Talks with Johanna Riinu Annuk, 🇪🇪

ABC presents “Alumni Talks”, offering a real insight into our programs by the participants themselves.

We are very glad to announce a new addition to our blog, which focuses on the former participants of the ABC programs. This is the chance for our alumni to share a little bit of their background and their experience with the ABC Business Academy.

“Studying abroad is about experiencing a foreign country — and the most beautiful, important part of a country’s culture is its people.”

Alexander Kolker

This week’s featured alumni is Johanna Riinu Annuk from Estonia, who participated in Toronto Business Academy this summer.

A glance in Johanna’s story

Johanna likes to call herself a global citizen, she believes in adventures and likes to jump headfirst into unknown waters. Currently, she is helping Estonian Companies to Export Products or Services to Asian Markets, besides she is managing the biggest Asian conference Asia Update in the region.

In the following questions Johanna gives her insight on studying abroad and her ABC experience as well as her goals for the future.

Let’s get to know you!

What is your studying abroad experience and any tips for young people?

J: My experience with studying abroad started when I was 12. Ever since, I have not looked back and have managed to get 6 countries (Sweden, France, China, Thailand, The Netherlands, and Canada) under my belt. When you want to become a global citizen, you have to be open-minded and willing to learn from locals, as well as from others. It is not going to be easy to leave, either for a few months or years. There is a saying in the international exchange community, “exchange is not a year in one’s life, but a life in a year.” This can be used for every single study course no matter whether they last for years or just some weeks.

What is your definition of a success story?

J: Definition of a success story! Biggest gained success for me personally is participating in and exploring different programs like Toronto Business Academy. I have been surrounded by so many inspirational young people. Truth be told, people like us are going to be the ones to either change or rule the future!

What are your ambitions for the future?

J: I aspire to never get scared to continuously set high goals for myself. Besides, I hope to experience comfort zone once I’m old and grey. Other than that, to be and lead the change, provide solutions to problems and travel the world.

Any advice you would give to your younger self?

J: Don’t settle, dream even bigger, things always happen for a reason. Life only throws your way situations that will prepare you for everything you’ve ever asked for. Most importantly, don’t subscribe to Netflix! (It is crazy how many episodes one can watch per day…)

What about ABC?

What is your most memorable moment from your ABC course?

J: Huh, so many memorable moments! I remember trying to complete the coursework with my teammates but then deciding that we need and deserve a break (only a few hours before the deadline). So we went to see an exhibition at the art museum. Besides, one day, during the TBA course, I  got a random invitation to my email for an external networking event. There I had the chance to meet some really amazing people such as ambassadors and even a Canadian-Estonian! We are still in touch, for both personal and professional reasons.

Why people should go for the ABC experience?

J: For the people. Honestly, I met some of the most incredible people there! It is such a great way to connect, learn, explore and develop yourself! Most importantly, living in a new city will make you enjoy the summer a billion times more!

Summer in downtown Toronto. Can’t get any better!

“Exchange is not a year in one’s life, but a life in a year.
