Meet our participants – Maja Crnogorac

Today we are back with another blog in our #meetourparticipants series. We will be catching up with Maja who was one of our participants on Toronto Business Academy in 2017.

Since then she has recently moved to Toronto and some major changes in her life which are both inspiring and motivating!

Read on to find out more…

So Maja, tell us a little about yourself!

[Maja]: Hello there! 🙂

My name is Maja, and I grew up in Split, Croatia.

That is where I graduated high school, and later on, got my Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Operations. Almost everyone in that part of the country is in the tourism industry. I didn’t like it for many reasons, so I decided to get my Master’s degree in something different – International Economy. That turned out to be a smart move for me because it has changed my mindset, and opened many doors for me.

During my 2 years of Master’s programme I did an internship at the European Parliament in Brussels, studied Business management in Austria, and then the cherry on top – went to Toronto to participate at Toronto Business Academy.

All those steps have changed me completely as a person – privately and professionally – and I’m glad it did!

What have you been doing since the program in 2017?

[Maja]: When TBA 2017 was finished, I stayed a bit more in Canada to explore the country and think about my next step. Since I met so many determined and successful people there, you can imagine how motivated I was. But I had to go back home to Croatia to finish my Master’s degree – and ended up being the first one to graduate in my group.

Job hunt was the next step, which wasn’t really hard for me because I already had a lot of experience. Long story short – I didn’t like how people were treated there, nobody would let me change anything.

Next thing you know, I moved to Canada.

What made you decide to make the move to Canada?

[Maja]: I think the right answer here is that I always thought I was made for bigger things. Croatia was way to small for me. To some, it might seem like I gave up easily on Croatia, but changes there need to be made on a higher level. And honestly, I choose to fight my own fight and not everybody else’s.

Canada is the exact opposite of Croatia, and that’s why moving to Canada wasn’t a tough decision for me. All of you, who will come to ABC Business Academy in the future, will know what I am talking about.

Canada cares about its people and entrepreneurs, and since the graphic design was my passion, it was only natural for me to start my own company.

Tell us about your new business and your new job in Canada!

[Maja]: Not even one month after coming to Canada, I opened my own digital marketing agency in Toronto called CRX Marketing & Design because marketing and graphic design are my two passions. Graphic design is something I love to do in my free time.

A couple of days after that, I got a job at a big Canadian lead generation company. What started as a Marketing position, after only one month turned into a General Manager position – so that’s where I’m at right now, and I am really proud of everything I have accomplished, and I couldn’t be happier!

Do you feel TBA helped prepare you for your career?

[Maja]: Absolutely. TBA gave me a chance I would usually never get.

You’re just a stressed student back home – and suddenly you are in Toronto, a huge, fast-paced city, sitting in a conference room of the BMO bank on the 68 floor listening to their Executives teaching you about everything first hand! Nothing can top that.

During the 3 weeks of the program, I got familiar with the city, people, businesses, and while the programme was coming to an end I knew exactly this is where I’m coming back. And this is where I will do great things.

The entire programme was a game changer for me and made me realize what I really want to do in my life, and where I want to do it.

Any advice for this year’s participants?

[Maja]: Learn as much as you can. Ask questions. Network. Think outside of the box.

Since you are at TBA you are already made for big things!

Don’t settle.

Thank you, Maja, for taking the time to share your amazing journey with us! We can’t wait to follow your journey as you settle into your new life in Toronto.

We love to see how our ABC family are going out and taking on the world!

Make sure to stay tuned for the next #meetourparticipants blog post for more inspiring interviews!
